Examensarbete Design of a 3D configurator

The objective of this thesis is to examinate the potential of 3D configurator. The thesis can be seen as a first step in development of a 3D configurator that is used as a support for everyone at Trafikverket that works with railway.

This thesis will involve the development of a standalone 3D configurator aimed at assisting project managers in exploring different design options for railway projects. The configurator will focus on adjusting substructure elements (such as bridges, tunnels, and embankments) as well as technical systems like power supply and signaling. The tool will provide simplified indicators for costs, climate impact, and risks, demonstrating its potential for early-stage project planning.

Research question:

How can a 3D configurator help the organization visualize and try railway design components for better understanding of potential impacts on cost, environmental factors, and risks in different configurations?
