Thesis Proposal: Design of Solar Panel System for a Drone Launcher used in Sea Rescuing Operations

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) is a voluntary organization for sea rescuing operations along the Swedish coast and greater lakes. The personnel at SSRS face a multitude of different scenarios while in rescue operation, which requires different type of rescue gear and resources. SSRS and collaborating partners from industry and academia are developing a drone system which shall aid in sea rescuing operations by providing valuable data of the accident. The purpose is for the personnel to receive information on what rescue gear and other resources to bring before leaving shore.
When not in use, the plane-like drone is stored in an enclosure on the drone launching unit. To enable longer uptime in case of a power outage the unit Is equipped with solar panels. However, these are not Integrated Into the existing battery backup system. This project aims to finalize the design of the solar panel system and integrate it into the existing power supply system of the unit by:
- Selecting and evaluating components for voltage regulation of the solar panels
- Implementing rotational control of the unit to optimize the energy production
- Integrating the solar panel system into the battery charging system
- Verification and validation of the complete system for battery charging
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for 2 students with a background in mechatronic, electrical engineering, or equivalent program, who wish to conduct their thesis during the spring of 2023. Applicants shall have experience in electrical engineering, software development. Applicants shall also have experience from programming languages such as C++ or Python, and it is meritorious to have previous experience from or knowledge of battery charging and management, solar panel systems and systems engineering.
