Doctoral student in dynamic compression of fluids

Publicerad 2021-04-17

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics

Production of energy concentrations in fluids with high temperatures and pressures by means of an imploding shock wave is of great interest to a multitude of phenomena in nature, technology and medicine. The major goal of this project is to investigate by experiment, computation and theory the fundamental properties of strong shock implosion leading to extreme compression of fluids. It aims at further development of the shock generation techniques in laboratory environment. Using sophisticated experimental equipment, including high-speed visualization and other relevant diagnostics, we aim at exploring both experimentally and numerically, the efficiency of energy concentration by imploding shocks and behavior of various matter under such conditions.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Assoc Prof Michael Liverts and Prof Nicholas Apazidis
