Data analysis of carpool CO2 emissions from OBFCM data

Description of the thesis proposal:

Syntronic provides an account for our carpool CO2 emissions due to requirements from customers and partners. Currently we provide an estimate based on the yearly amount of fuel purchased. All new cars since 2021 have an OBFCM (On-Board Fuel Consumption Meter) installed. The data from the OBFCM can be extracted via the OBD (On-Board Diagnostic) port using an OBD2-connector. This connector is the same one used during the yearly car inspection or in a workshop for reading error codes and other data from the car.

This thesis work would consist of:

First deciding on a method for extracting the data (Raspberry PI to OBD2-connector, ELM327 Bluetooth connector etc..).

Then through analysis of the extracted data, explore how it can be used. Some examples could be:

  • Can we see how the driving style of the trip affects the fuel consumption as well as costs/profits?
  • What type of consequences would surface if the driver were driving unnecessarily fast?
  • How much quicker would you reach your destination? Would the time saved be worth it?
  • What is the cost in the form of increased fuel costs, wear and tear on the vehicle and the tires as well as the increased risk for ending up in an accident?
  • What effect would this driving style have on the environment?
  • Can a driver be given an “eco-driving score” when returning the carpool car? Give the driver tips for how to improve their score next time depending on what they got a low score on?

For a successful thesis work, we believe that the applicants should have:

  • Experience in Python or any other programming languages commonly used for data analysis.
