Master thesis: Deoxygenation of wood pyrolysis oil

The Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) process works by fluidizing catalyst in steam and vaporized hydrocarbons in order to break down the heavy hydrocarbons into lighter usable liquid fuels. Preems refinery in Lysekil operates the only FCC unit in the world that co-processes wood pyrolysis oil continuously. The co-processing wood pyrolysis is a part of defossilizing of the FCC unit, but one large remaining challenge for co-processing wood pyrolysis is the significant amount of oxygen components contained within the oil.

Purpose

The purpose of this master thesis proposal is to evaluate the feasibility of a large-scale deoxygenation plant through the means of a techno-economic assessment. The data collection for the assessment will either be taken from existing literature values or with the addition of self-quantification of the pyrolysis oil composition and properties on a laboratory scale.

Location

You will primarily conduct your thesis work at your university in collaboration with supervisors at Preemraff Gothenburg and Preemraff Lysekil.

Do you have this background?

A master student in Chemical, Bio or Industrial Economic engineering or the like. Preferably some experience with performing techno-economic studies or process development.
