Erasmus MC

Erasmus MC has developed a strategic vision for 2009-2013 (and beyond) that takes the broad and multidisciplinary input of staff, students, patients, and external relations into account. The basic principles are:

  • Cooperation
  • Pushing back frontiers
  • Being firmly rooted in society
Strategic Direction ’013 is a logical sequel to Strategic Direction ’08 and builds on successful organizational developments that were initiated in the period of 2003-2008. Strategic Direction ’013 has set the bar high and describes the organizational objectives for the following policy period in a sharp and challenging way.

The essence of the Erasmus MC vision is summarized in the mission statement for 2013:

“Erasmus MC is an internationally recognized center for excellent, dedicated patient care, highly rated transfer of knowledge and high-quality knowledge development in the fields of illness and health.”

Main objectives
At Erasmus MC, the patient is at the center of both cure and care.

‘Patient-centered care’ is at the basis of the Erasmus MC identity. All activities are aimed at the improvement of general and individual patient care, and social healthcare. The Erasmus MC ‘patient-centered care’ campaign visualizes this objective.

Erasmus MC aims to be one of the best medical research institutes in the world.

The quality of the scientific input is more important then the quantity. Erasmus MC assesses its quality and results on the basis of the number of publications in leading scientific journals and the citation index in international literature.
Erasmus MC has a number of focal points for fundamental and patient-related research.

For fundamental research these are:

  • genetics and cellular biology;
  • neurosciences;
  • health sciences;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • molecular medicine.
For patient-related research these are:

  • oncology;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • infectious diseases and inflammatory processes;
  • endocrinology;
  • gastro-intestinal and liver diseases.
