Ph.D. In algorithms and architectures for high-performance machine-learning

Publicerad 2022-10-06

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

This research project will develop faster, more resource-effective and more scalable methods for machine learning and decision-making. The research includes algorithm development, mathematical analysis, implementation and performance evaluation. Working together with experts in computer architecture, we will investigate how machine learning algorithms and computer systems can be improved and radically re-designed for unprecedented efficiency and scalability.

The PhD position is financed by the national research program WASP (Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, www.wasp-sweden-org) that offers a graduate school with many opportunities for cooperation and international research exchanges with partner universities. The project is a ”Twinning project” where a supplementary PhD position has been opened in the Professor Per Stenström’s research group on Computer Architecture at Chalmers University. Together, we will take a holistic view of algorithm-architecture co-design and explore radically new computing architectures and algorithms, optimized for ML.

Third-cycle subject: Electrical engineering

Supervision: Professor Mikael Johansson

What we offer

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge
  • Admission to third-cycle studies in Electrical Engineering requires the applicant to have completed courses equivalent to at least 120 higher education credits from second-cycle studies or higher in the subject Electrical Engineering or other subjects deemed directly relevant to the specialization in question. These requirements will also be considered fulfilled by applicants who have acquired the equivalent knowledge through other means. Normally, a master’s degree in the relevant research domain fulfills these requirements.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here

  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

We are looking for candidates with strong knowledge in applied mathematics and computer science. Experience from algorithm development for machine learning is desired. You need a strong academic track record, be analytical and independent, and have a passion for research and problem solving.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student.
